The annoying photographer

Starting this week I had the always enjoyable opportunity to go with the Houston Center for Photography Capture Crawl to the Culinary Institute LeNotre. It was a great experience, but it was a challenge too because we were taking picture while the teachers were giving their classes too. Some of them were willing to have the photos taken since some of the pics will be used for the institute publicity. But I could see in other faces they were not totally confortable having a flock of  guys pointing the cameras and shooting flashes to their faces. I know, as photographer, we usually bother people, our subjects  and, in this cases, I try to stay as far as I can using a telephoto lens and pointing the flash to the ceiling to diffuse the light. It reminded me one time, some month ago,  I went to a music show in a restaurant and there was a photographer contracted by the organizers and he was always between the public and the musician with a hat and shooting the flash in front of the singer for more than the necessary time. I think it was the extreme case of one annoying photographer I have ever seen. I almost loose my Leica trowing it to his head because I could not enjoy the show as I wanted. The point is, as photographer  we must try to be invisible. We must try to do not be so annoying. We are not the subjects, we are always behind the camera.  

El fotógrafo, el fastidioso.
 
Comenzando esta semana tuve la siempre placentera oportunidad de ir con el grupo del Centro de Fotografía de Houston al Instituto Culinario LeNotre. Fue una gran experiencia, pero a la vez fue un reto debido a que tomábamos fotos mientras los profesores daban sus clases. Algunos de ellos estaban dispuestos a ser fotografiados debido a que algunas fotos podrían ser usadas para publicidad del instituto. Pero pude ver en otros rostros que no estaban totalmente cómodos con el enjambre de gente apuntando cámaras y flashes a sus caras.  Reconozco que, como fotógrafos, normalmente fastidiamos a la gente, nuestros sujetos de trabajo y en este caso traté lo mas posible de mantenerme alejado usando un lente de largo alcance y apuntando el flash hacia el techo para difundir la luz. Esto me hizo recordar una anécdota de unos meses antes cuando asistí  a un show musical en un restaurant y había un fotógrafo, contratado por los organizadores, que estuvo casi todo el concierto entre el publico y los músicos, con un sombrero y bombardeando de flashes a los músicos mas de el tiempo necesario. Pienso que este es el caso mas extremo del fotógrafo fastidioso que haya visto.  Casi pierdo mi Leica por las ganas de tirársela a la cabeza por no dejarme disfrutar el show como quería. El punto es, como fotógrafos, deberíamos tratar de ser invisibles.  No somos el sujeto porque siempre estaremos detrás de la cámara.
